Spotlight Overview
Spotlight turns a plain-language request into a live Jira chart, table, or report. Describe what you want to see, let Atlassian-hosted AI draft it, review the result, and save. It runs entirely inside Atlassian Forge - no external servers, and your data never leaves your Atlassian tenant.
What Spotlight gives your team
Section titled “What Spotlight gives your team”- A Draft with AI box that turns requests like “open bugs by assignee in project PAY” into a ready-to-save chart. Drafting runs on Atlassian-hosted AI, so your prompt never leaves the Atlassian platform.
- A deterministic builder with ten quick-start templates - the AI is a shortcut, never a requirement.
- Four data sources: issue charts (JQL), sprint velocity, project access reviews, and AI-composed custom plans for everything in between.
- A personal My spotlights gallery plus an optional site-wide Team spotlights gallery, governed by group-based permissions.
- A Spotlight Chart gadget that brings the same builder to any Jira dashboard.
Data sources
Section titled “Data sources”| Source | What it shows | Rendered as |
|---|---|---|
| Issue charts | A JQL query of your choice, grouped by status, assignee, priority, and more | Bar, pie, or line chart |
| Sprint velocity | Committed vs completed per closed sprint, from a Scrum board | Grouped bar chart |
| Project access | Role assignments - who holds which role - per project | Table |
| Custom plan (AI-built) | A read-only pipeline over Jira REST composed by the AI for requests the fixed sources don’t cover (SLA summaries, aging reports, …) | Stat tiles, tables, and charts |
Live data, viewer’s permissions
Section titled “Live data, viewer’s permissions”A saved spotlight stores its definition - the query, the settings, the description - never a copy of the data. Every time a spotlight renders, it fetches fresh data from Jira with the viewer’s own permissions. Two people can open the same shared spotlight and see different numbers, because each sees only what Jira lets them see. See Sharing & Team Gallery.
Requirements
Section titled “Requirements”- Jira Cloud (Forge apps don’t run on Server / Data Center)
- Sprint velocity needs a project with a Scrum board and at least one closed sprint
- Project access tables need project-admin permission on the projects listed
- Custom plans that read Jira Service Management data (SLAs, requests) need JSM on the site
